In our journey as followers of Jesus, we often encounter moments of doubt and disconnection. We may wonder if we are truly connected to God and His Holy Spirit. This concern can lead to a fear of being spiritually disconnected. However, as believers, we have been given the extraordinary gift of the Holy Spirit. In this blog post, we will explore the concept of being “spirit filled” and how it can transform our lives.

When we talk about being “spirit filled,” we are referring to the presence and power of the Holy Spirit within us as believers. In Ephesians 5:18, the apostle Paul instructs believers, “Do not be drunk with wine, which leads to reckless actions. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” This verse highlights the importance of being filled with the Holy Spirit, allowing His influence to guide and shape our lives.

It’s common for believers to have misconceptions and concerns about being “spirit filled.” Some worry that they may “leak” the Holy Spirit and need constant refilling. Others wonder if they are truly filled with the Spirit. These concerns arise from a misunderstanding of the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives. The Holy Spirit is not limited or withheld from believers. Instead, it requires our surrender and willingness to be filled.

To be spirit filled, we need to surrender our lives to the leading and direction of the Holy Spirit. Just as an airplane pilot relies on ground control to navigate, we need to trust the Holy Spirit as our guide. Surrender involves letting go of our own desires and allowing the Spirit’s influence to shape our thoughts, actions, and decisions. It is a daily choice to submit and surrender to the Holy Spirit’s leading in our lives.

Walking in step with the Spirit means not comparing our spiritual journey to that of other believers. It is about staying focused on the Holy Spirit’s leading and not getting distracted by what others are doing. Just as a marching band member follows the rhythm set by their leader, we must follow the Holy Spirit’s lead and rhythm. This requires a conscious effort to keep our focus on the Spirit’s guidance and not on external influences.

When we surrender and allow the Holy Spirit to fill us, we begin to experience the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Galatians 5:22-23 describes this fruit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These qualities flow naturally as a result of being rooted in God’s love and surrendering to the Holy Spirit’s work within us. Instead of striving to attain these qualities on our own, we allow the Spirit to produce them in us.

Being “spirit filled” leads to a fulfilling life that reflects the goodness and love of God to the world. Through surrendering to the Holy Spirit, we discover a deep and unending love that impacts every aspect of our lives. This love sustains us during trials and empowers us to love others selflessly. Surrendering to the Holy Spirit allows us to lead a life that is rooted in God’s love and expresses His love in our relationships, actions, and attitudes.

Being “spirit filled” is not about measuring up to other Christians or seeking more spiritual experiences. It is about surrendering to the Holy Spirit’s leading and filling every aspect of our lives. When we walk in step with the Spirit, our roots grow deeper in God’s love, and the fruit of the Spirit becomes evident in our lives. Let us embrace the power of the Holy Spirit, surrendering to His leading, and experiencing the depth of God’s love. Through surrender, we live a full life and become vessels of God’s love to a world in need.
