At Berean Church, Pastor Tyler challenged us with a profound and transformative message: to serve the rejects, just as Jesus did. This thought-provoking sermon rooted in Mark chapter 2, brings to light the importance of reaching out to those marginalized by society and religious norms.
Drawing from Mark 2:13-17, we explored how Jesus’ ministry broke conventional barriers. Jesus did not limit His outreach to the religious elite or the morally upright. Instead, He sought out individuals like Levi, a tax collector reviled by his community. When Jesus invited Levi to follow Him, it was a deliberate and intentional act—a statement that even those seen as the lowest in society could find a place in Jesus’ ministry.
Levi’s response to Jesus was immediate and profound. He left everything behind to follow Jesus and even hosted a banquet for Jesus, inviting his fellow tax collectors and other sinners. This act highlighted Levi’s immense gratitude and the transformative impact Jesus had on his life. The Pharisees, who prided themselves on their moral superiority, were confounded by Jesus’ willingness to associate with individuals they viewed as ‘scum’. Their disdain only further emphasized Jesus’ mission: to call not the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Pastor Tyler drew powerful parallels to our present day, urging us to consider those we might view as outcasts. Whether they are incarcerated youth, individuals battling addiction, those living a homosexual lifestyle, or anyone marginalized by society, we should remember that Jesus would reach out to them first.
The story of a small church in Possum Trot, Texas, drove home this message with incredible impact. Moved by the plight of children caught in the social work system, 22 families from this church adopted a total of 77 children. This remarkable act of love exemplifies how we, too, can make a transformative difference by serving the rejects in our communities.
Pastor Tyler concluded with a powerful call to action, encouraging us to view ourselves as spiritual EMTs—equipped to reach out to those in need of Jesus’ healing touch. Our mission is not to create an exclusive club, but to be a hospital for the broken-hearted, bringing them the hope and love of Jesus.
For those new to Jesus, Pastor Tyler extended an invitation to embrace His love and salvation. For those already walking with Jesus, he challenged us to examine our approach to church and outreach. It’s time to go beyond our comfort zones and to truly serve the rejects, just as Jesus did.
Pastor Tyler’s message resonated deeply, urging us to emulate Jesus in reaching out to those society often overlooks. May we embrace this calling with open hearts, knowing that in serving the rejects, we are following in the footsteps of our Savior, Jesus Christ. As we go forth, let’s strive to be a beacon of hope, reflecting the love and compassion of Jesus to a world in desperate need of His grace.
